Long Run and a Winner!

Happy Sunday everyone! How’s the weather in everyones neck of the woods? It was supposed to be sunny and 70 here today but its cloudy, windy and 60 boo!!

At least I could still run!

Very slowly but 13 miles none the less! I have a BIG issue with starting too fast. I am really bad at pacing myself as well as holding a pace. I bounce between 8:30 min/mile and 10:40 during almost all of my runs, not helpful.

Part of it was actually really exciting! I took my normal path but instead of looping where I normally do I kept running. I know the area from driving but have never run it. I ended up on a muddy path leaping over roots and branches ( I felt super bad-ass) plus it was downhill for almost a mile so I was FLYING! The only bad thing? It really pooped me out and then I had to go uphill on the return… no fun, no fun. Plus I ended up in a not so great part of town, unhappy moment. But at least it was an adventure!

I woke up extra early for this run because PerMa asked me to come to her church with her for the last sermon of the season. It was actually really nice and it was the flower sermon so we came home with some lovely decorations

Post- run and pre-church I of course had breakfast! Overnight oats are so great for after a long run because right after, I’m starving, thirsty and I don’t want to think or move.

My Love Story

I have something personal to share with you all. About a year ago, I fell in love, extremely in love. I need my love every morning. I never forget about it, I can’t function without it. 201106050837.jpg

Breakfast, I love you.

I realized how strong my love is when I woke up this morning slightly cranky and tired. I immediately decided to skip early morning yoga and thought I should take a complete rest day. I stumbled downstairs, made a yogurt oatmeal bowl and within 2 minutes of eating felt better and ready to take on the day.

I know not everyone shares my love, but oh I wish they did! I actually have never really been a breakfast skipper however for most of high school and my freshman year of college the options were basically

201106050844.jpg 201106050844.jpg

201106050845.jpg ONLY and apple….

Or of course if I are breakfast in the dining hall something like this

201106050848.jpg 201106050848.jpg

But I also had pizza as an after school snack so there you go.

When I decided to lose weight (initially in the healthy way) the first thing I knew was I had to get breakfast under control. I’d always read about the benefits of eating a good, filling breakfast

  • Breakfast enhances your body’s metabolism.
  • Eating breakfast improves your daily nutrient consumption. Even a simple breakfast can provide you with a great amount of vitamins like vitamin B6, A, minerals like calcium, iron, etc.
  • Breakfast is essential for improving your concentration and productivity throughout the day.
  • It is also observed that eating a healthy breakfast plays an important role in controlling weight gain.
  • Eating breakfast also reduces the risk of heart diseases and is also essential in checking your cholesterol levels.
  • Breakfast keeps you energized the whole day and controls your hunger pangs and snacking urges.

I got into a rotation of either oatmeal of cheerios with skim milk and strawberries, occasionally scrambled egg whites with veggies and on the weekend one big pancake with flavored yogurt and fruit or a whole wheat bagel sandwich with cream cheese and veggies.

This was January of 2010 and I have eaten breakfast every single day since. Obviously my tastes have evolved

Protein Bakes

Microwave Pancakes

Breakfast Cookie Dough

And of course

Oatmeal/ Overnight oats ❤ ❤ ❤

This morning I enjoyed a yogurt parfait, not pictured but it was greek yogurt, oats, rice chex, a banana, truvia, and cinnamon in an almost gone almond butter jar. Delicious =).

Alright, I must decide what to do with my day. Have a great Sunday all!

What’s your all time favorite breakfast? Ignore nutrition! All time, ignoring nutrition… either french toast or a big blueberry muffin with sugar on top like from Panera or Starbucks.

Favorite summer time fruit? Cherries!

Pick my workout please! Power walk? Vinyasa Yoga? Zumba?

Shopping, Gardening and Yogurt

Hello all!! My has it been forever?! I’ve been somewhat busy, my older sister has been home for a total of 5 days in the past 2 weeks before she goes away for the whole summer so I’ve been spending my time catching up with her! We spent some quality shopping time together

The car that we share

She always like to drive =)

We ended up at the best place in the world… TARGET!! Our main goal was shoes

I made away with some boat shoes. Uggo picture but I promise they are cute!

She’s leaving super early tomorrow morning so we had a fun goodbye dinner tonight.

Delicious fluffy bread ( I had two)

All three of us got different salads! Big sis got the falafel (she’s stubborn about her food posing for pictures =P)

PerMa got the Spinach

And your one and only fave permanent blogger got the fatoush! Lettuce, cucs, green pepper, tomato, pickled turnips, and pita chips. It doesn’t look like much but the bowl was deep and it was FILLING, I didn’t even finish it. But that’s ok, I needed room for dessert!!

Menchie’s Frozen yogurt JUST opened near us, of course we had to try it!

Mine on the left, blueberry yogurt with mango and graham crackers and PerMa’s on the right, chocolate with graham crackers and peanut butter sauce. Again with the stubborn sis but she got mango sorbet topped with blueberries and raspberries (she’s vegan).

Annnnnnd in some other news. I have been running.

10 miles saturday, 4 miles with 2 miles of hills today plus body weight exercises.

Cross training, power yoga on Sunday and total conditioning group fitness on Monday.

And gardening.

In my running clothes… after my 10 miler, I then took a nap.

But PerMa did a BEAUTIFUL job!

And eating lots of oats in a jar

Oh, I was also sick one day

So cinnamon and I hung out

And watched three twilight movies in a row. I must have Taylor Lautner, I will have him, mark my words.

I think that’s a long enough post for you all! I’ll try to catch you up on everything over the next few days, be back tomorrow with June goals and a may review/telling you how I failed =)

Do you have siblings? Do you like to hang out with them?

What did you do over memorial day? Yard work? Pool?

Twilight, yes or no?

And not in to cool brick house kind of way. I’m sorry to start this post in a really whiny way but I have been in a serious funk the past few days. 201104291840.jpg

I think maybe I’m just way burnt out, it’s been a crazy year and maybe knowing that it’s almost over has got me calling it quits a little too early!

The only three things I’ve wanted to do are workout, eat and lie in bed. Which is virtually what had been happening (don’t worry, I’ve still been going to class!) But more homework needs to get done than has been for sure!

I’m giving myself a break now because it’s Friday but seriously, tomorrow I am making a to-do list a plow through it pre-funk Caitlin style… I can get things done son.

To cheer myself up I’ve been

1) Working out (duh)

2) Trying to be with people

3) Taking walks as weather permits

4) Dressing pretty (this legit makes me feel better)

5) Blasting this playlist

Some cheerin’ up eats

Overnight oats

I finished this in exactly one week, delicious though not recommended, I had a stomach ache for a few days!

And I re-found the my macadamia nut butter in the back of my fridge, huzzah! On whole grain waffles with honey and pumpkin cottage cheese

And honestly most of my lunches and dinners have looked like this, boring but the lack of motivation goes everywhere in my life… =(.

It is BEAUTIFUL out today so I took a good walk downtown this afternoon and am seeing a play on campus tonight! The wind is supposed to be brutal in the morning so looks like I’ll be in the gym, let’s see how I do on the treadmill! If I was outside I would go for maybe 9-11 miles but I’d be happy with 6-7 in the gym with some cross training time.

My half is two weeks from Sunday!!!

How do you de-funk yourself?

What’s your favorite song right now?

Any races coming up?

I was KNOCKED OUT last night. I woke up after 9 hours of drooling (not a joke), my pillows everywhere all wrapped in blankets, It was amazing.

I don’t have bad history of insomnia but it tends to run in my family and I had a rough time with it earlier this year. Here are some things I do to help myself get those precious hours of shut eye.

1) Do you best to get on a regular schedule. I know this may seem impossible for college students but truly I prioritize sleep at night. I am very productive during the day so at night I don’t feel a need to stay up late doing work .

2) Choose your nighttime snack wisely. Having something really sugary right before I climb in bed keeps me up on my computer for hours. I try to go for a little bowl of cereal, fruit or peanut butter toast.

3) Regular exercise. One of the many benefits!

4) Deep breathing. When all else fails, I lye in bed, clothes my eyes and count backwards from 100. Each number I take a deep breath. I normally never make it past 80.

When I woke up this morning feeling so refreshed I bounced over to the gym to complete 60 minutes on the bike with intervals and a very easy 10 minute cool down on the ET.

In case you were curious if I get tired of overnight oats… no I don’t.

1/3 cup oats

1 scoop chocolate protein

1 tbsp chia

skim milk

leftover PB

topped with banana, dried cranberries and flax

blurry layers of goodness. Plus some blueberry green tea that I got last night, it’s delicious!

Do you suffer from sleep issues? How do you deal with it?

Are you a messy or clean sleeper? I am the craziest sleeper every. I often have to my sheets back on my bed in the morning.

Foods you can never imagine getting tired of? Any nut butter, overnight oats, chocolate, hummus, cereal, trail mix, pretzels, spinach, baby carrots

Could it be?

Is it FINALLY coming?201104061052.jpg

I don’t know, what I DO know it I walked to the gym only in these clothes this morning instead of giant sweats!! DSCI0005.JPGThis morning I ran 2 miles in just under 18 minutes when my shin stared talkin’ sh** to me. Again, I hate risking things on short runs so very sadly I hopped off the treadmill and onto the ET.

When I started a reverse interval on the ET my shin felt like it was going to break it half… I think THAT is what caused it!! My cross training is HURTING my running instead of helping… clearly no more reverse intervals for me!!

I also got on the bike so in total I did about 35 minutes of cardio and 45 minutes of full body weights.

O SO DELICIOUS breakfast! Overnight pumpkin oats!

The rest of my yogurt, water, pumpkin, 1/3 cup oats, chocolate whey protein, stevia and pumpkin pie spice

This morning topped with banana, cinnamon raising granola crumbles (gettin to the bottom of the bag) and sunflower butter. I’m almost out =(, do we think it’s too late in the year to get another jar?

The texture of these was different because I actually had a good amount of yogurt left. Still delicious I just couldn’t detect the doughiness of the oats as much.

Happy hump day everyone!

What is your favorite cross training?

Should I buy more sunflower butter, yay or nay?

>Listen and Love

As planned I was productive last night and it felt good! I even turned off my computer for 20 minutes before bed to read some Operation Beautiful (the book) and slept great. Whilst homeworking I snacked on
Wasa light n’ crisp crackers with banana and cinnamon drizzled in honey and a glass of skim milk with truvia mixed in.
I also went back for a third cracker with a little more honey.

My workout this morning was planned to be a 5.5 mile tempo run followed by some quick and good full body weights. I did 4.15 mile temp run, good full body weights and some serious stretching. I pushed myself during my run until my knee said “absolutely not” and I felt mentally good through the whole thing so with the combo of not quitting too early and happiness it was a great workout!

I tried a new snack before I left in the form of “banana protein pudding”
1/2 a banana, 1/2 scoop vanilla whey protein and about 1/4 cup milk
I mixed it up yesterday and put it in the fridge for this morning and I swear it tasted like vanilla pudding and got me through my workout, this will be happening again!
For breakfast even though we have ANOTHER wind cill advisory (feels like -27…oh joy) I had overnight oats! Made in the yogurt tub because there was just enough left, easiest clean up ever =).

Oats, vanilla protein powder, ginger, skim milk, yogurt and truvia

Topped with pear slices and trail mix
Hiding oats =)

With a mix of green and sugar cookie sleight ride tea… good combo!

I love the sweet and salty combo that the trail mix adds to the mix!

I have a class on the Civil Rights Movement this semester and we are currently starting on the freedom rides and the march from Selma to Montgomery. The literature has been really moving so I wanted to leave you with this quote to ponder throughout the day.

“Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars… Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”–Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

What’s your favorite quote? Mine actually changes depending on what I need that day
